Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Training

The Course

The course will run as an online based course with some face-to-face sessions at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

It is designed for medical and non-medical personnel undertaking retinal photography and/or grading for diabetic eye disease in a Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Service. This training and accreditation manual is based on the City and Guild Level 3 National Vocational Training requirements. This in turn helps screener/graders to be trained to fully satisfy the National Service Framework requirements for diabetic retinopathy screening.

The lectures help to get you started on the subject of screening and grading, but by no means replace the self-directed learning both for the theoretical and practical part of the NVQ. The lectures are there to help you understand the material, but they will not replace your own learning efforts.

Each lecture will end with grading for diabetic retinopathy as this will form a major part of your time as a screener and you do need to become proficient in it. You will be given feedback of your gradings, as this is the only way your misgradings can be corrected. At the end of the course, you will be given a set of photographs, you will need to grade alone without any help from anyone. These gradings will form part of your final evaluation.

The course is supervised by the Reading Centre and accreditated by the Department of Research and Development, Moorfields Eye Hospital (Endorsed by the Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Committee, MEH)
